Keywords – Choose Wisely or Suffer
Keywords are the first thing a search engine looks at when it visits your website. Keywords also tell the search engine spiders what your site is supposed to contain. Keywords should also be what your prospective site visitors type in as their search text.
So, how do you go about selecting the right keywords for your web site? First consider what your product or service is. All keywords need to be directly related and relevant to your product, service or topic. For example, if I’m selling widgets, I want to use all of the words ant terms that would describe the product. Don’t just use widgets use white oblong widgets with three holes, or Acme Deluxe Widgets. Be specific and focus on the topic or product.
Once you have a big list of keywords, it’s time to chop it down to size. You want the best 5-6 to incorporate into you web page. Each page can and should have its own list of keywords based upon the web pages content. There are a number of tools that will help you accomplish this. Wordtracker is a subscription based solution but offers a ton of bells and whistles that will allow you to look at variations of the keywords you are initially searching on. A couple of things to remember when your making your list of keywords for your website is to use phases instead of single words. And be sure to look at variations of spellings and common misspellings.
